5 Ways to Use Emojis in Recruitment

5 Ways to Use Emojis in Recruitment Nowadays its virtually impossible to send a text, instant message or email without using an emoji ever since they exploded in to our digital worlds in the late 90s. The man behind them is  Shigetaka Kurita, who as an employee of NTT DoCoMo back in the day, sought to revolutionize Japans means of communication. And the rest as they say.. is history. While most are used amongst friends and family, they are increasingly being used in the world of recruitment from hiring to firing. 1. Recruitment campaigns In 2015 a number of companies used emojis in their recruitment campaigns. One of the most high-profile companys to do it was the beauty group LOreal. It launched a campaign asking people to apply for jobs with them using just emojis. https://twitter.com/lorealtalent/status/788351049195192320 2. Job title Last year a UK translation company advertised for an Emoji Translator and the response was huge. It was advertised as a consultant role and CEO and Founder Jurga Zilinskiene  says theyre ready to place someone in the job imminently.  She said: All the media coverage the advert generated resulted in us receiving well over 400 applicants. Of course this took quite some time for us to process, so we are still in the interview stage at the moment, but the shortlisted candidates look very promising. The internet allows you to connect with people in every country of the world, and the biggest brands often have local teams to handle marketing and PR in any given country. If you’re not a multinational, then you will need help to translate your message for foreign markets. But what if you publish a great message, only to find out the emoji you included doesn’t mean what you think it did? Or even has quite negative connotations in a particular country or region? For example, the ‘thumbs up’ is very offensive in the Middle East. That’s why we need a specialist. 3.  Attracting the right talent Some companies have used emojis to recruit a specific type of talent to their company. Irish software company Intercom used emojis in its advertising campaign in a bid to attract Dublin-based engineers, developers and other emoji-fluent people to the company. It placed poster adverts along the commuter routes that lead into Dublin’s “Silicon Docks” area where companies like  Facebook, Google and Airbnb, among others, are based. Cool to see @intercom hiring through emoji in Dublin. That kind of brevity would impress Beckett. pic.twitter.com/89lkAYaaXT paul hayes (@paulhayesman) October 9, 2015 But emojis werent only used to attract technical staff, a French advertising agency used them in an online video campaign called Guess the ad, get the job to try to get the best creative talent through its doors. 4. Increase response rate A  survey  by Jobvite found that 43% of job seekers use mobile devices for their job search and people are searching for jobs anytime, anywhere. In fact, a recruitment firm in New Zealand was born out of the fact that more people are using their phones than their computers for the first time ever. Erik Kostelnik, is TextRecruits Co-Founder and CEO.  He says: When used correctly, emojis are a great way to break the ice and add personality to candidate communications. Recruiters that use emojis in their texts experience higher response rates because their messages become more personalized, making it that much easier for a candidate to quickly respond. One of the most successful TextRecruit stories is the U.S. Marine Corps who included American Flag emojis in their texts, which served as a great call to action for recruits and drove a tremendous response in their hiring campaigns. 5. Candidate feedback Now technically this isnt one of the best ways to give candidate feedback (and well come on to why in a bit) but there are some recruitment companies who have started using emojis to discuss potential candidates. Lever  introduced this last year as a way for co-workers to use them to do just that. Leela Srinivasan is the Chief Marketing Officer at Lever.  She says: Lever allows for the use of emojis in notes on the candidate profile, because hiring is a team sport. The combination of @-mentioning and emojis serve to engage more of the team in sharing feedback, and in general, we see overall team engagement in hiring skyrocket when customers roll out Lever, because we make it so easy (and fun) to participate. Its not possible to push that to the candidate however, since candidate communications are pushed from a different part of the platform. You cant @-mention a candidate, only your team mates. Once a candidate is hired, their profile is locked and access is restricted only to those with specific Admin access, so even as a hire you cant access feedback about yourself. But even using emojis to discuss candidates with colleagues can sometimes prove risky. A British teenager was recently  rejected for a job as a waitress in a steak restaurant via an emoji. The company claimed it was sent in error and that it was meant to be sent to a co-worker and had to issue an apology. Have you ever used emojis to discuss clients or candidates? Or maybe youve found a better use for them. Tell is in the comments section (with our without emojis).

Branding For A Job Vs Branding For An Opportunity - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Branding For A Job Vs Branding For An Opportunity - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Most job seekers brand themselves for a job because thats how weve been taught to write resumes. Weve not only been taught to write resumes branding ourselves for a job, but it was reinforced while there were candidate shortages because you could make lots of mistakes in a forgiving job market. But in a job market of job shortages, the market isnt forgiving at all its brutal. Weve been taught that hiring managers look for the same thing, despite the obvious fact that each employer has its own unique set of circumstances and problems that are different from other employers. Weve been taught that hiring managers seek an average candidate with average skills and average experience. So you brand yourself as a Senior Accountant, Marketing Director or IT Manager. It was good enough to help you land your last job it should be good enough for this job search. Except that its not Because in a job market with job shortages, where you compete against an average 1,000 applicants and most employers use ATS plus an additional 1 to 4 pre-screen steps, being good enough doesnt get you interviews anymore. If branding yourself for a job doesnt get you interviews, what will? Branding yourself for a specific opportunity helps you show the hiring manger that youre a superior candidate for that specific job, rather than superior for any job. Heres 5 ways to brand yourself for a specific opportunity: Resume Title: Your resume title or personal branding statement should include the actual title of the specific opportunity youre applying for. This will be much more specific than Marketing Professional, Programmer or Sales Executive because its unlikely that the specific opportunity youre applying for will have this broad of a title. Research: In order to brand yourself for a specific opportunity, youll need to do more research on the opportunity before you send in your resume. Since most candidates dont do much research until they are selected for an interview, this will mean starting your research earlier in your job search process. Go Beyond The Job Description: Job descriptions list skills, not underlying problems. Job descriptions dont list problems because they are public Employers dont want competitors, customers and shareholders to see their problems. If you want to brand yourself for the specific opportunity, you need to understand why the employer is hiring the position, even if the position is a replacement before you send in your resume. By first understanding the employers (and hiring managers) underlying problems, you can show on your resume that youve already solved similar problems, branding yourself as a superior candidate for that specific opportunity. Bullet Points: Choose bullet points that are important for the specific opportunity, to give support that youve already solved problems similar to the employers and hiring managers priority issues. Even if youre applying for basically the same job at different employers, each employer (and hiring manager) have different issues. If you list the same bullet points for each opportunity you apply to, youre not going to connect on key issues for most employers, unnecessarily lowering your odds. Emphasis: Most of us learned to emphasize the points that were most proud of. Your hiring managers dont really care what youre most proud of they care about how youre going to help them solve problems. Emphasize how youve already solved similar problems to the priority issues your individual hiding manager faces. Branding yourself for the job just isnt good enough in todays job market featuring job shortage, mass competition, 2 4 levels of pre-screening and ATSs. Why? Theres no average job, so why would you want to write a resume for an average job? Youll find much greater job search success and improve your odds of winning interviews by branding yourself specifically for each individual opportunity that you apply to. How to Go From Entry-Level to the Next Level - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

How to Go From Entry-Level to the Next Level - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career After spending nearly two years with a company as an intern turned full-time employee you decide it’s time for something new. You attempt to update your resume with the skills and experience gained during your time as an intern and entry-level employee, when you realize there isn’t much to update. But, you might want to think twice before changing “assisted” to “led.” According to a 2014 CareerBuilder survey, 58 percent of hiring managers said they’ve caught a lie on a resume, from embellished skills (57 percent) and responsibilities (55 percent) to dates of employment (42 percent) to job title (34 percent). And half of the 2,188 employers surveyed said they would automatically dismiss a candidate if they caught a lie on their resume. Making entry-level experience appeal to hiring managers can be tricky. After all, there’s only so much you can accomplish in a starter role. Fortunately, there are a number of ways to describe that role so it attracts hiring managers’ attention without stretching the truth. Here are four things worth mentioning to better describe and boost your entry-level experience: 1. How you helped achieve organizational goals. Whether you’re a seasoned employee or a student intern, the work you do contributes to the overall mission and vision of the company. So, instead of simply listing your day-to-day tasks, describe how your work helped your organization inch closer toward achieving its goals. Hiring managers don’t care as much about the fact that you helped out with your company’s social media efforts. What they do care about is how your assistance with social media helped further your company’s goal of building brand recognition by doubling the amount of followers on corporate social accounts. What to write: Improved brand recognition by assisting with social media efforts on corporate accounts and doubling the amount of followers. 2. Who you worked with. As an entry-level employee, you probably worked closely with a number of people people who can vouch for your skills and capacity for teamwork. Make a list of people you regularly worked with or reported to and describe those relationships on your resume. Mentioning who you worked with (by their title, not their name) on your resume not only shows hiring managers that you’re a team player, but also provides them with potential references. If you had the opportunity to interact and work with clients firsthand, that’s also a great resume-booster, as it shows your ability to communicate with clients and meet their needs. What to write: Worked closely with graphic designer to create a number of original, visually-appealing infographics. 3. What your supervisor said. Keep track of the praise and recognition you receive while on the job, as it can be useful when it comes time to hit the job boards. While you don’t want to quote your managers’ praise word for word on your resume, there are subtle ways to use what your superiors said to reinforce the skills and traits that make you a top-notch employee. If you want to take it a step further, ask your supervisor to endorse or recommend you on a social professional network, like LinkedIn. What to write: Recognized by supervisor for ability to regularly meet and exceed quarterly sales goals, which contributed to overall sales initiatives. 4. Your results in numbers. You’ve heard it before: numbers or it didn’t happen. Hiring managers don’t just want to know what you did from 9 to 5; they want to know what you accomplished in those eight hours. If your social media efforts resulted in an increase in followers and engagement by 50 percent, say so. As an entry-level employee, those numbers may not always be very high. If that’s the case, focus on quantifying your duties. Saying you drafted an average of two original articles a day on behalf of your clients, for instance, shows what you’re capable of getting done during the workday. What to write: Drafted an average of two original, engaging pieces of content a day on behalf of clients, including blog posts, newsletters, and whitepapers. What are some other ways to describe entry-level experience on your resume to help you land a job?
